1st draft of DPS

This is my first draft of my dps. I am planning on putting the picture of the band in front of the fire I think this will look nice and give an eye catching effect. I will make the fire more transparent so that it is not as striking and the writing is easier to read. So far I am happy with the way my dps is turning out and I am not having any problems.

1st draft of contents

This is my first draft of my contents page and so far I am very happy! I am going to add page numbers with titles onto each picture on the middle section.

3rd draft of front cover with the background

I am really happy with the way my front cover is turning out.
I think that the background goes well and adds to the indie effect. I think to improve this further I am going to change the colour of the top banner to purple then the writing to black, this will make it match the bottom banner and not look so out of place.

2nd draft of front cover

I decided to stick further to my TA feedback and prefer it without the black banner. I think without the black banner it look neater and more in-place.
I think that the background so far does not look right e.g not 'indie' and I need to choose something that is more eye-catching and makes the band stands out as well as my tags.
I am planning on putting on more advertisements to make the cover more interesting.

First draft of front cover

So far I am happy with the way my front cover is turning out and I am looking forward to adding more to it. The only problem I have come across so far was cutting out the picture of the band, I did not realize how difficult it would be, I restarted numerous times as I some how kept cutting off parts of peoples faces and feet, in the end I did over come this problem by zooming right into the picture and carefully going over every part.

Full double page spread write up.

If you are tired of listening to your average 'every-day' music then look no further! Peaceful Panic is exactly what you are looking for and i can promise that you will not be disappointed - after you have read this you will be dying to listen to the hot new band Peaceful Panic and will not stop thinking about them.
This week's top story is of four boys with one dream. The new upcoming band Peaceful Panic will no doubt be stealing your hearts and minds with their brilliant music and outstanding lyrics.

Peaceful Panic are a new four piece band all aged 17. The band consists of;
A lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist - Liam Broughton
A backing vocalist and bass guitarist - Connor Petch
A lead guitarist - James Boyle
A drummer - Luke Friskney

Each member of the band loves what they do and cannot wait to find out what their audiences think of their music. Music is their everything and with your support you can help them to become to best new chart-topping indie band of 2015.
Peaceful Panic work together to write all of their own songs. Each member puts 110% into their role and take it very seriously. The have regular band practises and are always coming up with new ideas to share with the group. I feel very lucky to know them all personally and to watch them progress is amazing.

Peaceful Panic can be found on Facebook, Soundcloud and Bandcamp. They have recently released one of their first songs 'The barn' on Soundcloud and is available to purchase now! 'The Barn' is based on a place where the band hang out and escape from reality, a quote from the song is 'Head down to the barn that where i'm understood' this shows how comfortable and at home they feel in the barn and with each other.

Before 'Peaceful Panic' became a band they would do what you would expect any other teenage boys to do and still continue to no. They go out, go to parties, they go to college, have jobs - they really are just like most normal teenage boys.

Liam broughton (The lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist) And Connor Petch (Backing vocalist and bass guitarist) started off around 3 years ago making youtube videos of them both singing whilst Liam also played guitar. Liam and Connor did covers such as 'Payphone' by Maroon 5 and 'Too close' by Alex Clare. After so long they deleted this account and stopped.

Each band member has their own individual style and their own caring personalities. They never fail to turn any moment into a happy one! They are all very mischievous and are forever making each other laugh and playing pranks on each other. I can assure you that as they progress through the music industry they will become very successful and gain a very unique fan base that will support them throughout their music careers . I believe that the music they will create in the future will mean a lot to hundreds of people as Peaceful Panic like to make sure that their lyrics are alway relatable to different situations people may be facing - whether they be good or bad.

((I have not used all of this text in my DPS as I could not fit it on. I understand that in a real magazine the main article could go on for 5 or 6 pages whereas ours only goes over two))

Photo's that could possibly be used as a background/fake album cover

 This is my first photograph which I took only a few weeks ago. I really like this picture as the sunset is very bright and really stands out - perfect to help a magazine stand out over all others. I think the bright sunset would really catch my audiences eye.

This is my second photograph, this was taken around the end of July. I really like this photo as well and I think that it would suit the Indie theme really well.
I think that the black and white would go well will my house style and would emphasise the mysterious effect of my magazine.
I like the fact that you can see the reflection of the two boys (Liam and Alex) in the water.

Prezi - Rejection from photoshoot - Oliver

Planning a photoshoot3.

Yesterday I planned with the band a photo shoot for Monday, after college. At the shoot I will interview each member individual, and then at the same time/just after I will take some individual photographs.
When I have interviewed everyone I will then move on to taking group photographs. Depending on the weather I will try and get the band outside so that I have a different background.

More photos that could be used as backgrounds/fake album covers.

 I love this photo as the sky, clouds and plants look really nice. I love taking pictures of silhouettes as I think that they look beautiful and you can do it with anything.

Planning a second photo shoot.

I have been trying to organise a second photo shoot with the band peaceful panic.
At the moment I am having some trouble finding a date that I am able to gather the members of the band together, this is because they are in their second year of college and have deadline dates for their subject's coursework. Another reason why they are having trouble with getting together is that one of the members lives a long distance away and is only available at certain times during the week, of which the other members are either busy with their college work, or busy with their jobs.
Therefore, to overcome this issue I am going to have to take individual photos of each member during next week, then Photoshop them together to create a single image.
I will take to photographs on a black background so that it is easier to manipulate them together.

What happened in my photo shoot?

On Friday I had my photo shoot.
The photos I took on Friday are what I am going to use for my contents page. I took pictures of Patrick Wilson and Oliver O'Brien.
I asked each of them to bring in a hat and some glasses so that I could pose them as different people.
Overall I think that the photo shoot went very well and I think I took some good photos that I will be able to use for my contents page.
When organising the shoot I had no trouble when asking my models to bring in equipment as they already had what I needed, although Patrick did not bring in a hat, he brought with him a hoody which was just as useful.
During my photo shoot I did not have to worry about make-up as both of my models were male and I feel that they did not need it.
I will upload my photos on Monday when I am back in college.

Updated and final ideas - cover.

What will my cover look like;
  • At the top of my cover will be the title. The title will have a black banner behind it.

  • A photo of the band will cover the front cover, I will arrange the band so that there are two boys at the front and then three at the back. Not only will this look tidy, I will leave plenty of space for pugs and advertisements.

  • Around the sides of my page will be advertisements and exclusives on what it inside the magazine + what you will be reading about.

  • There will be a bar code on the bottom right of the page, this will be joined by the issue number so that my magazine will follower convention.

What will the colour of the cover be;
  • I would like the background for my magazine to be a very dark blue/black/white and I am going to experiment with this when I design the cover to see what will fit best.

Updated and final ideas - Double page spread.

Here is my initial ideas for my double page spread.

What will be on my double page spread;
  • On the left I would like a picture of the band together and the outside of the picture will be ripped, this will give the effect that the band a breaking out of the page.

  • For the 'Get to know the band' I will have medium close ups of each member then writing underneath each picture saying something about them e.g. hobbies, favourite songs/bands, have they always wanted to be in a band, what is the best part about being in a band, what do you like most about your role in the band?

  • I would like a group photo of the band then underneath I will write about them, I will ask them together questions about, who set up the band, if you could describe each other in 1 word what would it be, if you could perform anywhere in the world where would it be and why? How did you come up with the name Peaceful Panic? Where do you get the inspiration from when writing songs? By 2015 how many songs would you like to have recorded and sold?

  • Underneath the title on the double page spread I will write a short description of what is on the double page spread and some information about Peaceful Panic, where they come from and who they are.
What is the design of my Double page spread;
  • My double page spread will look similar (colour wise) to the contents page.
  • I would like the page to have burned edges - again to emphasise the urban theme.

Updates and final ideas - contents

These are my updated ideas for my contents page.

I have decided for my contents page to make it look as urban as possible. For the background I would like to have it plain white with slightly burned edges. I would like my information to be covering the page and a picture to go with each piece of information.
I would like a big title in the middle at the top of the page saying 'what's new this week' the pictures and information will then be featured at the side and underneath of this title.
I would like to have quite large pictures compared to the writing as I think that this would make the page look more interesting and less boring as usually people only have a quick look in a contents page this is to look for the page they want to read and what else is available to read.

This is similar to how I would like my contents page.

What will be featured on my contents page;
    • Get to know the band (peaceful panic) - with a picture of the band together.(DPS)
    • Exclusive information on the new upcoming band Peaceful Panic.(DPS) Page50-51
    • Celebrity Gossip - Picture of a celebrity. page 22
    • Most listened to songs of 2014. Page 16
    • Agony Aunt. Page 20
    •  Celebrity marriages. Page 30
    • What's your favourite song from 2014 - let us know! Page 35
What will my page look like;
  • Burned edges - getting lighter towards the middle.
  • Each headline comes with a picture as a quick preview.
  • Banners will be used with titles.
  • The big title in the middle will have a black banner behind it.

What do I want my photoshoot to look like?

These are photos I have taken from the internet to show what I would like my photos (when I take them) to look like.
 This is my first photograph, I like this as each of the boys has their own pose and they don't all look the same. The part I like least about this is the bottom part, I think that the stripes at too distracting and take most of the attention off of the band.

I really like this photograph as I love the way it is set out, I am definitely going to try and take a photograph similar to this one when I come to photographing the band, I am going to get the band to sit on the stairs in the corridor of the school as this is the only place with stairs that I can get them to sit.

 I also really like this photograph as I feel it looks quite urban. I am going to take a photo similar to this one on the school field, I may use this on the cover of the magazine, not only because its eye-catching but because it has plenty of space around the photo to put advertisements and pugs.

 I love this photo as I am a huge fan of taking silhouettes. I am most definitely going to be taking photographs like this as I think they look really effective and will work well with most things. I think a picture such as one like this would also look good on a front cover and it is again not just very eye-catching but also has room for advertisements.

What is on average indie music magazines.

On most indie magazine covers, from what I have researched, you would normally find just one person. With my magazine I am going to break this convention and use a group of people, I think by having more people on the front it makes the magazine more eye-catching.
Also, all magazines have pugs e.g. bar codes, issue number and price, I am not going to break this convention, I think that if this convention is broken then the magazine will not be realistic and will not look like a real magazine.
I will have information on the cover of the magazine to show what is inside, I think that this makes the magazine more buy-able, I believe this is because no one would want to buy a magazine if they do not know what is on the inside, especially if it an expensive magazine as it would be a waste of money if the buyer was not interested in the information that is presented.

Initial double page spread ideas 3.

I really like this magazine double page spread as it is different to all the others I have researched so far, I like the way that the page is separated into a top and a bottom.
If I was to separate my page in this way I think that I would use music notes/newspaper as I think this would give a nice effect.
I like how this page has been separated e.g. by the guitar and the pattern - I would consider using this effect in my magazine as it will stop the page looking boring, so instead it will be eye-catching, fun to look at and not an eye sore.
I also like the fact that two different fonts have been used in the title, this emphasises that the page is fun to look at.
I think by layering pictures and having things behind text e.g. titles makes the page looks unique and interesting to see.
The colours on this cover are quite light, I will not use these colours on my magazine, the colours I will use will be dark colours such as black, dark blue, blood red.

Initial double page ideas 2.

I really like this page as it is different and catches your eye.
I love the layout of this and would definitely consider using this for my double page spread. One of my favourite parts to this magazine is the banners I think they work great and could look great on an indie magazine.
I also like the idea of having a banner for each title - I think it works really well.
I think the background for this magazine is quite interesting and gives a sense of mystery, I like it also because it looks urban. I would definitely consider using a background similar to this on my magazine.

Inital double page spread ideas.

 I really like that on the left of this contents page it has a medium close up of each person.
I think I am going to take this idea and have a medium close up of each person in the band and then underneath I will write something about them .e.g. Hobbies, Favourite place, what instrument they play and why, have they always wanted to be in a band, plans for the future, what bands do they listen to.
I think that this would be a great way for the audience to 'get to know the band'
To get this sort of information I will interview each person of the band individually, I will have a list of questions to ask that I think will be interesting to read (something you would want to know about your favourite person/idol)

What will be on the contents page?

I would like to have on my contents page - Upcoming events, Headlines about different artists e.g what they have been up to. Celebrity gossip, 'get to know' part.
I will be using photos of 'Peaceful Panic' in the contents page, I think I am going to try and make the photos look burned/have a go as I really like this effect and would like to know what it would look like inside the magazine. I think the burned effect would make my magazine more eye catching.

Plan for taking photos.

When I come to taking photos of the band I have decided that I am going to take the photos around the Vale Academy. (I will also take a few photos outside for natural lighting - and to compare the quality of the photos)
I would like to take some photos of the band on the stars in the school, I think I can arrange the band well enough to get some really good shots that would be effective on the contents page.
I would like to get some action shots of the band, I think this will give a good effect, and would make the reader want to listen to what they're playing.
