What will be on the contents page?

I would like to have on my contents page - Upcoming events, Headlines about different artists e.g what they have been up to. Celebrity gossip, 'get to know' part.
I will be using photos of 'Peaceful Panic' in the contents page, I think I am going to try and make the photos look burned/have a go as I really like this effect and would like to know what it would look like inside the magazine. I think the burned effect would make my magazine more eye catching.

Plan for taking photos.

When I come to taking photos of the band I have decided that I am going to take the photos around the Vale Academy. (I will also take a few photos outside for natural lighting - and to compare the quality of the photos)
I would like to take some photos of the band on the stars in the school, I think I can arrange the band well enough to get some really good shots that would be effective on the contents page.
I would like to get some action shots of the band, I think this will give a good effect, and would make the reader want to listen to what they're playing.

TA Research Results.

Following the survey I analyzed the results and they are as follows.

Front cover
87% of people preferred the masthead to be at the top of the cover.
64% of people said that there should not be a black banner behind the mast head.
89% of people agreed that there should be a photograph of the band on the cover.
100% of people agreed that there should be advertisements.
91% of people said that there should be exclusives.
53% of people said that the background should be a dark blue/black.

Contents page
87% of people said that there should be a 'get to know peaceful panic'
98% of people said there should be a picture of the band together.
100% of people said there should be exclusive information about the new band.
49% of people said that there should celebrity gossip.
86% of people said there should be pictures of celebrities.
79% of people said that 'the most listened to song of 2014' should be shown.
30% of people said there should be an agony aunt.
80% of people said that 'your favourite song from 2014 - let us know!' should be shown.
41% of people said celebrity marriages should be shown.

Double page spread
89% of people said on the left should be a picture of the band with ripped edges.
89% of people said that there should be an interview with each band member.
90% of people said medium close ups should be show on the right with each interview.
87% of people agreed that under the title should be a short description of the band e.g who they are.

TA Research Survey

I created a survey to find out if my TA were attracted by my ideas.
I am going to hand these out to a year 11 class and ask they to complete the survey.

So far, from my research I can conclude that that the most popular mast heads are Smash, BlackElectric and Deton8.

Contents - initial ideas.

I like the middle contents page from this website as I think that the burnt effect would look good in an indie magazine.
If I was to use a burned effect in my magazine I would make all around the edges look as if they had been burnt with a flame, I think this would give a really nice effect.
This style would also make the page eye-catching.
I would put a group picture of the band on the left, and to make it more effective I would make their background around them white to make it look as if they have broken though the page, I will make them do a certain pose in the photo-shoot to emphasise this.

Researching magazine covers.

I really like this magazine cover and think that it is very eye-catching, my reason for this is that the girl has bright yellow hair - not something that you see every day.
I like the fact that the girl on the front is not your average stereo typical girl, she dresses and looks different.
I really like the way that the photographer has used the reflection in the girls glasses to show what she is looking at - instead of using the girls eyes which almost all magazines do. I may use this technique in my magazine when I come to take pictures of James.
This magazine just like all others uses pugs - bar code and issue number.
I like the styles of the mast head as they have put a line through the word 'indie' I am not sure why but I believe that by doing this it adds a good effect and emphasises the fact that this magazine is different to any other.
If I was to improve this magazine I would add advertisements to show what is inside the magazine instead of not having any.
The quote on the bottom right 'come and see the blinding' links to the picture of the girl as she is wearing glasses/sun glasses - meaning that she is looking at something bright? Something she can't look at without glasses.
I like the back ground for this cover as it is blurred - meaning that all the focus is on the girl.

Speaking to the band about clothing.

Over the weekend I have spoken to Liam, James and Luke about what I would like them to wear for the photo-shoot.
Each of them is happy about what I have chosen for them, I think they are happy with what I have chosen as I haven't changed their style completely and I have kept their normal clothes.
The only person I must speak to now is Connor but I am sure I will be able to speak to him on Peaceful Panics next band practice.

Indie bands research - walk off the earth

Walk Off The Earth.

Researching magazine covers.

This magazine is very different to all the others that I have researched as it portrays a completely different genre, due to it being indie rock.
I actually really like this cover not just because it is different but I like the idea of using a silhouette instead of a normal picture. I am definitely going to experiment with this when I come to taking my own pictures.

I like the way that the cover is not neat, this emphasises the 'indie rock' look, as does the pose of the drummer.

Researching magazine covers.

I like this magazine cover as not everyone in the band are looking into the camera - meaning that it does not follow convention and does in fact break it.
I really like the font they have used for the mast head and would definitely consider using something like that for my cover, I also really like how at the top of the cover they have listed names of famous singers and bands that are featured in the magazine I may also consider using this.
This magazine just like the others has used pugs - bar code and issue number.
Each person in this band is wearing something similar to each other, this is good as they do not look messy/odd instead they look like a good band, the fact that each one of them has a beard emphasises this.
I like the background that they have used for this cover as it is simple and goes well with what they are wearing e.g. they wouldn't have put one of the boys in a bright pink shirt with brown background.

How has my research informed planning and creativity?

What I have decided.
~ Photographs -  I will take individual photos (medium close up smiling/action shot) I will then afterwards take group photographs ( I will take some of then outside for a nice background and I may also arrange them in the corridors/on the stairs in the school)

~ Other images - Other images I will use on the cover/contents will be photos of equipment e.g. drums, guitars, microphone stand. Also, photos of them performing together.

~ Colours - The colours I would like to definitely like to use would be  Blacks, whites and reds. I do not want my magazine to be really colourful e.g. with pinks and purples as it would not fit at all with the band and their style.

~ Pugs - I would like to use pugs for my magazine, I would like to use a folded top right corner, price and issue number.

~ Puffs - I would like to use puffs in my magazine such as banners and spiky boxes.

~ Banners - I will definitely use banners within my work.

~ Main feature/headline - the main feature for my magazine will be 'peaceful panic' an up coming band.

What I need to look into.
~ Masthead - done 24/10/2014
~Strapline/sell line
~Representations
~Language, word signs/semiotics. Iconic, symbolic, indexical signs.

Researching more magazine covers.

This magazine cover is very different to any others that I have been looking at. The expression on the girls face is quite creepy and mysterious but at the same time quite scary.
I really like the background on this cover - I will definitely consider using it on my magazine as it adds a really nice effect.
This magazine just like the other also uses puffs (bar code and issue number)
I also really like the quote 'open the doors to madness' if I saw this on a magazine I would definitely look through it as I would expect something a little different to other magazines, I would expect lots of different style fonts and black & white pictures of people maybe with a similar expression to this woman on the front
I would think that the pages inside this magazine are definitely not colourful and follow the same house style as the front.
If I was in charge of making this magazine, I would keep everything the same but I would not use so much make up as I feel it is too heavy and also not needed.

Researching Magazine Covers.

I really like these two magazine covers as they are very girly and very colourful.

On this first cover I like the model they have used as she has a funky style and hair which goes well with the indie look - the girls glasses and headband emphasise this.
Personally although I really like this cover I do not think it is great as it does not have anything on the front (apart from the girl) to draw you in/to make you want to see what is inside.
I will make sure that when I come to making my cover that I will advertise what is inside e.g. upcoming music events, what is the main cover story or gossip.

I also like this cover as it is not too extreme and the expression on the girls face draws you in.
From this magazine I may use the girls pose in my own as I think it looks nice.
I like the simplicity of this cover as it isn't messy. If the cover looks messy the audience may assume that that is what the rest of the magazine will be like.

Both these magazines have used puffs - Bar codes.

TA Profile

My target audience will be a range of boys and girls, all aged between 16-19. They will each have their own individual indie style, they would maybe wear clothing such as beanies, oversized shirts and skinny jeans.
I think a typical indie person would eat out at a take away, Mc Donalds or at a restaurant.
And indie teen would most likely be found at festivals such as 'Y not' or 'Leeds festival'

Institutions.

Bauer media

I think that Bauer would be a really good company to publish my magazine because they target a younger audience which is what I would be looking for as well. The screen grab below is taken from the Bauer website, this also shows how they target a younger audience e.g. by using bright colours and pictures.

From the screen grab below, you can see that Bauer also target the same aged audience as I did. This would enable them to develop distribution. I intended my magazine to be bought on the shelves and also available as a digital download.

Their biggest competitor for my magazine would be Mojo. However, they do not currently have a pure Indie magazine for this target audience. Additionally, they have offices in the North and own a local radio station - Viking Radio which would help to sell my magazine regionally.

Therefore they would be an ideal producer and distributor for my magazine.

Initial Ideas For What I Would Like Luke To Wear.

This is what I would like Luke to wear but without the hat and glasses.

The outfit that this person is wearing is exactly what Luke would wear, this is perfect as it means that I do not have to change his style at all, it just means that I have to make sure that when I come to taking pictures of him he is wearing this outfit.
When I take the picture of Luke he will be holding a pair of drum sticks, I think that the pose that this person is doing will be perfect for the cover as long as I make sure that Luke is looking into the camera.

Initial Style Ideas.

Today I have decided that I would like one of my models to be wearing a bow tie as I think they look good and will emphasise the 'indie' look.

I really like this bow tie and if I decide to use it for definite I will have look in some shops in scunthorpe to see where I could possibly buy one similar.

Initial Model Ideas.

The models for my magazine cover will be;

Liam Broughton- Lead singer and guitarist (electric acoustic)
James Boyle - Electric guitarist
Luke Friskney - Drummer
Connor petch - Backing singer and bass player

I would like my models to look like indie boys.
What would I like each of them to wear?

Liam - A black blazer with a plain shirt underneath(black/white) Skinny jeans.
James - Aviators(maybe) Plain t-shit(black/white/grey) Black jeans.
Luke - Checkered shirt(open) With a black/grey t-shirt underneath. Black jeans.
Connor - Jacket with a t-shirt underneath. Black jeans.

I have chosen this type of clothing as it doesn't lose the 'indie' look.
Because the boys are already a band I don't want to change the styles they already have, therefore I have chosen clothes that I know will look good on the magazine cover, that they already wear themselves and that emphasise the 'indie' style.

Will my models have props?

Liam - Acoustic guitar and/or microphone.
James - Electric guitar.
Luke - Drum sticks.
Connor -  Bass guitar.

What genre have I chosen for my music magazine?

Today I have chosen to use 'Indie' for my genre.

Now that I have chosen my genre I am really looking forward to creating the music magazine, I am looking forward to testing new ideas such as different shot types and experimenting with what will look good and in what places.

I really like indie music and the fact that I have the opportunity to make a magazine on it has made me really happy.

I have chosen the genre 'Indie' as I feel that this genre will suit me better than any other. I already have different ideas on what/who I can put on the cover.
My boyfriend is in a band and writes all of his own music. I will use him and his band as models for my front cover as they already have an indie look and because they are already a band.

Researching magazines - mojo

The most outstanding part of this cover is the girls eyes and mouth. This is because they have been made brighter, especially the whites in her eyes.

The mast head occupies most of the top part of the cover. The colour of the mast head is white, I like the mast head as it is a really nice font, also the white contrasts really well with the pink.
I would definitely consider using this font style for my cover as I think it looks really nice, would suit a lot of genres, is readable and looks formal.

There are 10 cover stories on this cover, although there are a lot, it does not look cluttered, it is set out nice and neat. Each story has a different font, this grabs the reader attention to different parts of the cover.

This cover is most likely for girls, as it is very pink and girly. Although some of the text is on banners none of them are transparent.

The picture does not link to the headline as the headline is a made-up word. The girl on the cover is looking into the camera, this makes her look quite mysterious, her facial expression emphasises this.
The girl is sitting with her shoulders forward but her head turned towards the camera.

The shot type is a medium close up, I like this and would consider using this for my cover as it is a very successful shot as most of the magazines now-a-days use it.

Only the side parts of the image are covered by text, the rest of the image is showing.
This picture is also sharp and clear, this again is good as no one will want to buy a magazine with a low quality image.
The picture is in colour but the main colour for this cover is pink. The main part of the image fills the whole page, and is located in the middle.

I cannot see what the girl is wearing but I assume it is something either white or pink as that is the main colour. I think that if 'girly girls' are reading this then her outfit will appeal to the target audience as they may wear something like this woman would.

I think that this was taken in a studio as the lighting on her face looks like it was done on purpose.eg. a reflector was used.

There are no props in this cover but there is a free CD, having free items in a magazine will make people want to buy it as everyone likes free things.

The house colour for this magazine is pink. The writing, the girls lips and her hair make the house style.

There are no props for this magazine, I think if they were going to use a prop it would of had to be something pink so that it carries on with the theme.

This cover like the other two also follow convention as it has a bar code and a mast head.

My favourite part from this magazine is the fact that they have used only one colour but all different shades, I like this idea as it means that everything will match and there is no risk of putting two colours together that don't match.
There is not a part of this cover that I do not like, I think the cover is very well presented and very neat. The person who made this has clearly made sure that it does not end up looking messy, everything has its own place- making it easy to read.

researching magazine covers - Lily Allen

This magazine cover is by 'Q'. The part of the cover that catches my eye first is the picture of Lily as it is almost as if she is coming out the page.
Her facial expression shows she is angry, the big red writing emphasises this effect as a connotation of red would be anger/danger.

The masthead for this cover is on the top left, I think it is a good idea having it here as it doesn't take up too much space and leaves plenty of room for pictures and advertisements. The colour for the masthead is red and white, I would consider using this for my cover as it stands and from looking at other magazines they are successful colours.

There are 5 cover stories on this page, this is okay as they have set it out so that it doesn't look cluttered(everything has its own part of the page).

There are a variety of different fonts on this page, this is good because if they were all the same it would look plain and quite boring. Different fonts                                                                               will catch your eye.
The font types represent the genre as they are easy to read and stand out. It appeals to the target audience as it is bright, colourful and outrageous. Some of the writing is on banners but the banners are not semi transparent.
I believe that the magazine is aiming toward male and female audiences, I think that the main colours (red, white, black and blue) emphasise this as they are all 'boy girl' colours.

I think that the age group for this would be 18-25 years old as the cover shows youthful images.
The cover makes me want to buy it due to the dramatic picture and cover line.
The cover has pugs - Bar code and the picture on the top right (this makes it look like the corner of the page is turned)
There is no puff on this cover and there is no sell line. The front cover connotes the magazine quality as they have used a very famous singer, the layout is well presented and they have also used gutters.
The image does relate to the headline as Lily looks as if the is kicking.

Lily is posing in a very angry way, the broken microphone stand emphasises it. The shot taken is a long shot, this is very effective as any other shot would not look good with her pose and wouldn't be as effective.
I can tell the photo has been manipulated as it is a studio shot and the photo has been enhanced.

About a quarter of the image is covered by text, this is okay as all the image is still visible and it doesn't look cluttered.

The picture is in colour and also fills the whole cover (located in the centre).

On the cover Lily is wearing a black leather jacket, this comes across as feisty and rocky. Her clothes appeal to the target audience as it is something that teens would wear, not over the top and is buyable.

Lily's hair and makeup look very powerful as her eye makeup is quite heavy, this makes the picture look powerful and modern.

The only prop used on this cover is a microphone, this looks powerful as it looks like Lily has snapped it in half, emphasising the feistiness as the rock side of the cover.

There is no freebie in this magazine. I think if I was to create a magazine I would put in some sort of freebie, this way more people will want to buy it.

The house style for this cover is red e.g. red shoes, red cover line. The house style is something that appeals to them.

This magazine does follow convention as it has a bar code, price and a mast head.

The elements I like most about this magazine and would consider using in my magazine is the long shot photographs and the pose Lily is doing.

Magazine Final Contents Page.

Evaluation.

I am really happy with the front cover and I really enjoyed creating it.

My initial idea for my cover was to take half of Molly's face and half of Patricks then manipulate them together to create one.

When trying to accomplish this it was extremely difficult and in the end we realised that it would not work at all, the problem with my idea was that I had chosen two people with completely different face shapes and sizes which meant whenever we tried to put them together it was either the nose, eyes or hairline that I could not get to be level, therefore it looked nothing like a face, it was all out of proportion.

I decided to do this layout instead as I feel it still supports my idea of keeping the cover from being bias towards a gender, I also really like the layout and think it looks formal but fun.

I decided that I would use black and white for the pictures as I think it makes the students faces look smooth and gives the cover an eye catching effect. I decided to use red writing as I feel it jumps out of the page and adds to it being 'eye catching'

I have used three different font types on my page, one for the mast head, the contents and the across the top of patrick's head. I have done this to keep the text from looking plain/boring.

I have really enjoyed doing this project as I have liked being able to be in control and let my creative side out. Photoshop is an application that I have always wanted to use, so when I found out we would be using it I was really happy and excited to learn all the different techniques and to discover what the program could do.

Although I could not do my initial idea I am very happy with the outcome of my magazine.

If I was to do this again I would take more pictures and experiment with different props. I would also experiment with different effects on the picture to catch the reader eye.

My contents page for the magazine- I am really happy with this and would love to of seen what it would have looked like on an actual magazine.
I did the red text based on the design of the front cover so they both have some sort of link and don't look completely different.

Final front cover - finished.

Final Front Cover Idea.

This is my final idea for my magazine cover.
I really like this idea as I think it looks different and interesting.
I think that the red boxes and the black and white picture will definitely catch the readers eye and make them want to pick it up and read.

Front Cover - First idea.

This is my first idea for the front cover of my blog.
I do not think I will use this as I am not too keen on the colours I have picked and I do not think I like the layout of it.
If I was to choose to use this as my front over I do not think my readers would find it interesting, instead I think they would find it quite boring.
